Millard Announces State Grant Funding for Local Fire and EMS Companies
1/23/2014
ORANGEVILLE - Volunteer fire and emergency response organizations that serve citizens in the 109th Legislative District (covering most of Columbia County) have been awarded more than $270,000 in grants from the state, Rep. David Millard (R-Berwick) announced today.

“The steadfast volunteers in our fire companies and EMS services give so much to our community,” Millard said. “They all face considerable financial burdens with costs for everything from vehicles and facilities to equipment. These state grants help to support them in their mission to protect our neighborhoods, homes and loved ones.”

The grants were awarded to 20 fire and ambulance companies in the 109th Legislative District. The funding comes from an ongoing grant program created by the Legislature and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner. All funding comes from the proceeds from slot machine gaming, and not general fund tax revenue.

Legislation approved last year increased yearly funding for these grants to $30 million (up from $25 million). Grants may be used to assist with construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training or reducing existing debt.
