Millard to Sponsor Identity Theft Seminar for Seniors

To help local senior citizens identify actions which may make them targets for identity theft, Rep. David Millard (R-Millville) will sponsor two local seminars on the topic.

A seminar for Bloomsburg area residents will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, at the Bloomsburg Senior Center in St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9 St. Luke’s Way in Bloomsburg.

A seminar for Berwick area residents is set for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at the Berwick Senior Center, 1401 Orange St. in Berwick.

“According to the U.S. Department of Justice, identity theft is now the fastest growing crime in the nation,” Millard said.  “Unless individuals takes active steps to protect their personal information, their credit and finances could be at risk.”

The seminar will be led by Joyce O’Brien of the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.  Items covered at the event include information regarding what to do if one becomes a victim of identity thief, tips on how to protect personal information online and in everyday interactions, and guidelines on how to spot scams intended to swipe one’s identity.

“Local residents are absolutely at risk of identity theft,” Millard said.  “Phone scams, purchases from unsecured Web sites, and simply mail sitting in mailboxes can all be traps.  It’s extremely important to become informed of the risks.”

Both seminars are free of charge. So that enough materials are available, please RSVP by calling (570)759-8734 or (570)387-0246.  Light refreshments will be served.
